additional info - The teddy bear's origins can be traced back to President Theodore Roosevelt and an incident that occurred during a hunting trip in Mississippi in 1902.
Roosevelt, an avid hunter, went on a trip to Mississippi in November 1902 with the goal of bagging a black bear.
When Roosevelt didn't spot any bears after three days, some of his hunting companions tracked down an injured, elderly bear and tied it to a tree.
Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear, which some thought was unsportsmanlike and embarrassing.
Political cartoonist Clifford Berryman used the incident as inspiration for a cartoon in the Washington Post on November 16, 1902, which satirized Roosevelt's refusal to shoot the bear.
Morris Michtom, a candy store owner in Brooklyn, saw the cartoon and decided to create a stuffed bear toy to honor the president and call it "Teddy's Bear". Michtom asked his wife, Rose, to sew the prototype, which sold shortly after being placed in their store window. Michtom went on to mass produce the toy bears and eventually founded the Ideal Toy Company.
